Facelifts (Rhytidectomy)

As we age, the years of sun exposure, stress, and environmental pollutants cause bothersome wrinkles to etch themselves into our skin. As your face ages, you look older than you feel on the inside.

Facelifts can turn back the effects of gravity, exposure to the sun, and daily stress by removing excess skin, tightening the cheeks and neck, and sculpting the fat and muscles beneath the skin. If you have loose skin or jowls hanging from your face or beneath your chin, and it bothers you, then it’s time for facelift.

Your Individual Goals

You need to discuss your goals and expectations with Dr. Moses. He will tell you—honestly and bluntly—what the surgery will and won’t do for you. Facelifts are often combined with other facial surgeries, such as a blepharoplasty for your eyelids, microfat grafting to the cheeks and/or lips, or a chin implant. Together, you and Dr. Moses will discuss your choices and decide which procedures he recommends to achieve your desired result.

About Facelifts

For your safety and comfort, most facelifts are performed while you are asleep under general anesthesia at our outpatient surgical center. Usually facelifts take 2½ to 3½ hours, depending on what other procedures are also being done. Dr. Moses will determine the unique details of your procedure, such as where to place incisions to minimize their visibility. He will tighten your muscles and skin, while removing excess skin and fat and bringing the facial fat back to where it was when you were younger.

Recovery from Facelift Surgery

After your facelift, you’ll have a minimal dressing around your entire head for just the first night. Dr. Moses will ask you to keep your head elevated on a couple of pillows for a few days to decrease bruising and swelling. The drains will be removed with the dressing on the first morning after your facelift.

Your face will be bruised and puffy for a couple of weeks. You will also feel some numbness for a couple of months following a facelift. The scars will become less noticeable after a few weeks. At that point, most patients are very happy with their facelift, but the results continue to look better and more natural for at least six months.

After a Facelift

Dr. Moses is a board certified plastic surgeon. He knows the importance of feeling confident in your appearance. Wrinkles, jowls, or sagging skin on your face should not make you look older than you feel on the inside. After your facelift, you should feel and look younger and rested, but you’ll still look like you. Over many years, the results of your facelift will keep you looking younger than you would have looked without the surgery. Good facelifts look so natural that no one should know you had surgery. Months afterward, when you see your “before” photos, you’ll be amazed at the transformation you have undergone.
